Bully for you! I love the decision to switch. While I understand the appeal of Patreon as a creator, the consumer end of it, quite frankly, sucks shit. I'm happy you migrated, and the yearly sub was an absolute no-brainer for me. Love the move, love the pod, and love you, Mr. Saltypepper.

One more benefit of substack. I don't have the time to read the articles. I can hit the play button at the top of any article which allows me to listen to an AI read the articles while I'm driving. Awesome! Thanks for the move!

Thanks for all of this, Justin. Great perspective.

I know you were in love with per creation billing, but as a fan and listener I hated it. I trust you to live up to your word and release content for the full month. I’ve been following you for well over a decade. If you made the Patreon $12 a month, I would have trusted you to deliver on your promise to have the bonus eps each week. I got burned multiple times by other creators on per creation billing and Patreon did nothing to help me out. After the second time I capped all per creations (including yours to $12 a month) or never signed up for someone that per creation billing.

You always would promote it as “the gigantic $3 tier” or something like that and said $3 per week but when mostly everyone else on the platform is per month and you aren’t, that causes confusion. You (and Jen) are some of the few creators using per creation billing and I’m guessing that most people didn’t see “per episode” and limited their pledge after getting charge for more.

I’m super happy that you have moved away from Patreon and while I don’t 100% like everything about Substack, I do believe they are much better for people like you. I’ve joked in the Discord and other places online that if I had to mail you a check each month for the bonus content I would because I want to support you no matter how. I’m super excited for this year and the years to come of Px3.

From my perspective I never had a Patreon account and the whole platform seemed fishy to me, so even though I listened to the podcast for years (JRY enjoyer since NSFW Show era) I never had a paid sub until you moved here. I already had been following free newsletters and had a couple paid shows on Substack, so adding another paid sub for a show here is much easier for me rather than using a second site. I’m glad it is working out for you and wish you the best.

Domain names just take a while to resolve to a new address when you change them. This is because we have multiple tiers of domain name servers, and every level caches domain info for a while. The good reason for this is that domains need to resolve VERY fast or everything online would constantly have weird delay times. Even individual browsers and even some routers will cache domain information for a while.

This can be further exacerbated if your domain name host is slow to update entries on their name servers (most of them are, even the good ones).

I am paying you now.... I go back to "twit hype man".... I am only paying for the baby content...

I definitely liked being able to pay for a full year at a discount, but I have to admit that I find myself almost never listening to PX3 anymore. I know it's there and I'll remember to go to the other place to listen to it occassionally, but I still mainly listen to all of my content via Patreon in order without missing anything there, and then PX3 is just kinda around and available when I'm caught up on everything else and I think to listen.

The sub stack app needs some work with the video playback, that's my only gripe.

I’m very happy to hear that you think you’ll be making more the first year. I love the one year for 100 and it seems to be working out which is awesome.

Happy you like it here. We do, too!

Something else to consider is that your yearly folks are paid up for the year, as opposed to dipping in and out depending on the week. It’s also right after a presidential election year, which is when people would be winding down their political consumption, but getting a yearly promotional plan right as the election was winding down is a good lock-in for an otherwise slower year.

Thanks for sharing this information. I am hoping to get back in the creator space again now that my little one is not eating up all my spare time. Had never really thought about changing from Patreon, but interacting with Px3 here certainly makes me ponder migrating over. Definitely a much better interaction space.

Interesting read — you bring up some good points. I’m personally not a fan of substack, but I’m glad you found a better home.

Glad to hear that it's worked out well for you.

Like every old man that used to be a computer programmer before he became a retired energy trader I have my opinions about how I would change substack, but they're remarkably similar to the ways that I would change patreon, so that's pretty much a wash.

Again, glad to see that substack has worked out for you, much continued growth and success.

Substack took some getting used to, but I am starting to like it. Being a part of the formerly named $3 club has been amazing!
