Los Angeles Wildfires
Los Angeles County is currently facing one of its worst wildfire disasters in history. The ongoing crisis has claimed at least five lives, destroyed over 1,000 structures, and forced the evacuation of nearly 300,000 residents. The Palisades Fire, the most destructive of the blazes, has burned more than 17,000 acres and remains at 0% containment.
Mayor Karen Bass faced criticism for being abroad in Ghana during the initial outbreak. In her absence, acting Mayor Marquise Harris-Dawson stepped in to manage the crisis. Bass has defended her remote engagement via phone during the trip, but opponents, including former mayoral candidate Rick Caruso, have seized on her absence as a failure of leadership.
