Tragedy Strikes Over the Potomac
A devastating mid-air collision between a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines regional jet occurred near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, the worst aviation disaster in recent history. The incident, which took place during an annual proficiency training flight, resulted in the tragic loss of all 64 passengers aboard the jet as well as the military personnel onboard the helicopter.
The accident has raised concerns about air traffic control procedures at Reagan National Airport, particularly nighttime circling maneuvers that remain standard practice there but have been discontinued at many other airports due to safety risks. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have launched investigations into the cause of the collision. Meanwhile, President Trump addressed the nation, offering sharp criticism of outgoing Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg’s handling of aviation safety.
