Ah, yes. Free speech was weaponized to cause World War II.
We have been outward fans of Margaret Brennan. During the Biden administration, when we started the Sunday Sunday Sunday version of this program, I thought she was good at asking questions that weren’t being posed in the far more friendly confines of ABC and NBC. But woof, man, Margaret is not having a good time during the Trump 47th administration.
She’s had a few just weird moments—all involving J.D. Vance at some point. She moderated the vice presidential debate where Vance really cemented himself as a force to be reckoned with in politics. She’s also had a few interviews with him that have not gone great.
And now this, with Marco Rubio.
Obviously, a hate speech ban would not have prevented World War II. That said, I’ll defend our girl Margaret Brennan on this point. The way she phrased it was absolutely stupid. However, while curtailing free speech—would not have prevented World War II: Germany, France, and really Europe in general have instituted free speech restrictions to prevent another scenario like that from happening again. That is a fundamental difference between the United States and our cousins across the pond.
